What is the most common food safety violation in Chennai?

  • In most cases, it is the use of artificial colours. These addictions are toxic and in the long run can cause diseases such as cancer. The dark red colour in Chicken 65, grilled meat and bhajis come from the artificial colours. Many sweets and savoury shops also add such colours. Use of these colours are prohibited under the food safety rules although it can be used except up to a permissible level in some sweets.
  • The other common violation is the use of stale meat. Eateries either buy stale meat because they cost less or it turns stale because they fail to preserve them at the right temperature.
  • Other violations include adulteration, misbranding, and substandard quality of bakery items, groceries, milk, aerated drinks, package water, tea and coffee.
